The Goonies

The Goonies took over LYC today, with pirate paraphernalia everywhere.

Truthfully though, the campers sat down to a nice peaceful showing of the Goonies, equipped with popcorn and everything.

Derigging

Sailors are derigging their boats this afternoon. Tomorrow, the sailors will sail FJs in a mini regatta. The Optis and Lasers currently being derigged were used for the last time during camp today.

Park

Thursday morning sailors sailed to Clear Lake Park. They'll stay here for lunch and the afternoon, before sailing back to LYC

Wednesday night

Last night was the annual Seahorse Camp bonfire. The campers enjoyed a nice evening with s'mores and soccer and bonfire fun.

Shananigans

Here counselor Collin Scoville has fun at Bubba's Shrimp Palace before dinner. Kids could choose either a cheeseburger, hamburger, shrimp poboy, or popcorn shrimp.

Bubba's

Tonight the campers ventured away from known waters, and headed to Bubbas Shrimp Palace in San Leon. They were taken by power boats driven by volunteers. Here, they enter the place for dinner.

Pool time

Evening 1: AN AMAZING RACE

To kick off the evening, campers went on a hunt for a million dollars. Not really... But they did participate in a new activity, THE AMAZING RACE!
Campers were split into groups of 4-5 with one counselor, or two. They were handed clues and sent on power boats to go to the given location and participate in various tasks. Some tasks required pictures or video proof being sent to Jill Hughes, while others were simply activities that had to be approved by the chaperone there.
To begin, campers were sent to Kemah Boardwalk and given passes to trade in and use for one ride. They had to document the ride and send it to Jill.
From there, groups were given clues and sent to Waterford Marina Harbor...but many got confused and went to the wrong place. After arriving there, they went to the Covington's house, took a picture with them, and video of their group catching cheese puffs with their mouths.
The clues continued to roll in as campers headed to LYC to draw a map of the world and all seven continents with chalk, to play tennis and hit the ball consecutively to spell S-E-A-H-O-R-S-E C-A-M-P, and to correctly set a dining room table.
In a matter of 2 hours or so, kids completed around 5 tasks. The winners weren't necessarily the first to be done, but those that did everything correctly, earned extra bonus points, still finished fast, and it will have something to do with the cards collected. Each task gave kids a card from a deck of cards, and those collected will come into play when determining the winners. No champions have been named.

The evening is still going on, and will kids will continue to have fun until lights out at 10 p.m.
Sailing fun will commence again tomorrow morning.

Day 1

GOOD MORNING CAMPERS!
Counselor Sophie Duffy awoke the girl campers early this morning, singing and encouraging them to roll out of their air mattresses. After much protest (solely because of the early hour, otherwise, the campers were THRILLED to see a day of sailing ahead), the girls trotted to the pool to take their swimming test, which by then, the boys had already completed.
With the completion of two minutes of treading water and swimming the length of the pool came the OK to divide the campers into specific groups based on sailing experience. They then dined with their assigned coaches and counselors and got to know their group before heading to the dock to rig their boats.
Advanced and beginner sailors rigged, or learned to rigged, and then launched from the small boat harbor. As shown below, the "Pink Panthers" (advanced Opti sailors) launched and began their morning on the water.
Two hours of hot sun, little wind, and fun sailing passed before campers sailed back in and met in the ballroom for lunch. From there, after being stuffed with protein and water, the sailors came back for an afternoon on the lake. Unfortunately, a storm rolled in, which sent some in to de-rig and head to the yacht club, while others remained on the lake and sailed through the clouds.
The storm wasn't bad enough to send all sailors in, and may not even be deserving of the name "storm," so a few stayed out and practiced with their coaches. One group used their water sport day today and went tubing. The first day of sailing saw lots of improvement in sailors, just from the morning to afternoon. For others, it took a while to get a hold of, and the ever changing wind challenged them. Some Laser sailors noted that they flipped around 5 times today.

Seahorse Camp Sunday Evening

The 2013 Seahorse Camp kicked off this afternoon, welcoming around 45 campers and 15 counselors to the grounds of Lakewood Yacht Club. As campers poured in throughout the afternoon and set up home within the club, counselors, coaches, and volunteers alike worked to divide the kids up for the next morning's sailing activities.
To officially commence Seahorse Camp, head of this year's festivities, Jill Hughes, talked to the campers about the coming week, and introduced them to each counselor. After, the group headed for a hamburger dinner, their first meal spent together. Campers were then allowed to swim and unpack more, while others took to the volleyball net in the grass. After hours of fun, the group reconvened to play icebreakers and get to know each other. As night rolled in, campers went to bed at around 10 to ensure they'd be well rested for the long day of sailing ahead of them.
